The Chief AI Officer is moving into the boardroom
In recent weeks, several large organisations have named Chief AI Officers. That alone would be worth noting. What makes it more interesting is where some of these roles sit: on the management board, or in the office of the director general. AI leadership is moving closer to the top table.
Here is what happened, and what it tells us about how the CAIO role is changing.
ERGO Group puts AI on the Management Board
ERGO Group announced in late September that Guy Goldstein would take on the newly created role of Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer on the Management Board of ERGO Group AG, with effect from 1 October 2026. He holds the role alongside his position as CEO of ERGO NEXT in the United States.
His remit is the systematic implementation of artificial intelligence across the entire ERGO Group. In a statement published by ERGO NEXT, he said he would focus on "driving forward the Group's ambition to establish a leadership position in the field of artificial intelligence", which he described as "a key pillar of its strategic roadmap until 2030."
Deutsche Welle aims for common standards
Deutsche Welle's Director General, Barbara Massing, has appointed Simon Uhl as Chief AI Officer. He will be responsible for the strategic management of AI and data activities at DW and, with the management team, will set priorities for cross-functional initiatives and develop the company's AI strategy.
The role sits in Directorate General Management. DW says the aim is to improve cooperation between AI initiatives across the organisation, establish common standards and scale innovation more efficiently. Uhl previously served as Head of Editorial AI & Lab at DW. On his appointment, he said: "What matters is that we use these technologies responsibly and in ways that strengthen our journalistic mission."
Scalian moves from experiments to scale
Engineering group Scalian has appointed Clément Charruel as Chief AI Officer. He will define and implement the group's AI strategy, with a focus on embedding AI in critical systems engineering, particularly in aerospace, space, defence and energy.
Charruel summed up the shift many organisations are facing: "The challenge is no longer simply to experiment with artificial intelligence, but to successfully scale it and integrate it into environments where performance, reliability and risk management requirements are particularly stringent."
What these appointments have in common
Read together, the three announcements share a theme. Each organisation is trying to turn scattered AI activity into something coordinated:
- ERGO talks about systematic implementation across the group.
- DW talks about cooperation, common standards and scaling efficiently.
- Scalian talks about moving beyond experiments to scale.
In each case, the role is given a broad, organisation-wide brief rather than a single project.
Inspired's take
The trend is not simply that there are more CAIOs. It is where they report. When the role sits on the management board or in the director general's office, AI stops being a collection of pilots run by different teams and becomes a decision for the whole organisation.
That brings a harder test. A senior title does not by itself get separate teams working to one standard. The CAIOs who succeed will be the ones who can agree shared priorities with their peers, decide what to stop as well as what to scale, and show clear results. For anyone stepping into the role, the early question is less about which tools to use and more about who needs to agree before anything can scale.
